I am a sales guy.  I love every aspect of it — from the initial contact with a prospect, to nurturing and building a relationship, identification of an opportunity, and (ultimately) close.

Sales takes domain expertise and credibility; a whole lot of time to research, listen, understand and position; and the personality to connect with a decision-maker.  Plus, it absolutely demands the ability to shake off rejection.

Understandably, I have a high level of tolerance and patience for sales reps who seek to connect with me.  As long as they have demonstrated a level of professionalism and effort, I tend to give them a listen.

Here is a wonderful clip from the classic film Boiler Room of one sales rep giving an industry counterpart a bit of encouragement.

Yet, there continues to be a gaping, universe-sized gulf that separates accomplished sales professionals from those merely trolling for a hit.  Their lackluster efforts bring everyone in sales down, thus making our legitimate efforts more challenging.

I’ve included below an Email I received today from a sales rep at a company called Genisys Group.  Although I single out this particular firm, it is merely to illustrate the schlock cast upon B2B buyers by thousands (or should I write “millions”) of companies.

There is so much riding on every touch with a prospect.  Embrace pride and professionalism.
